Saving Time and Money with Custom RSS Feeds

July 29th, 2007

Shopping around for the best deal for a particular product can be both time-consuming and tiring. But, saving money is important, so perhaps you start with comparing prices at PriceGrabber. After searching PriceGrabber, you have a better picture of what the best retail price is, but what if there are promotions going on that PriceGrabber isn’t aware of? Heading over to Bargain Feeder is a good start, since we search the best bargain sites for their bargains and put them in a single, searchable place.

Shopping Mall

But, let’s say that Bargain Feeder can’t find any relevant matching bargains for the product you’re looking for, then you’re back to square one–well, not quite. Bargain Feeder enables you to subscribe to a custom RSS feed for the search you made. What this means to you is that you can now let your feed reader/news aggregator go and check every hour for new bargains that match your original search. If Bargain Feeder finds new bargains, it will return them to your feed reader. You never have to worry again about missing a bargain for the products you’re looking for.

To illustrate this with a concrete example, let’s say that I’m looking for a new Maxtor hard drive. I search for “maxtor” on Bargain Feeder, and find 40 some odd deals over the past seven days. None of the deals fit what I really want, so I click on the orange RSS icon in the top of the search results page, and voila you’ve created a custom RSS feed for your search. The next step is just to subscribe to the feed using your favorite feed reader, and you’re set.

You can create as many custom RSS feeds as you want. You can even add all kinds of interesting constraints to your search, for example, if you want to only get bargains from Deal News, just select “Deal News” from the Bargain Sites pull-down menu under the search input form, and click Apply.

Once you start using custom RSS feeds for your searches, you’ll find yourself saving a lot of time. And, they are particularly handy if you’re not in a rush to buy something, which can be useful when you’re planning for your friend’s birthday–or even your own birthday :) I’ve also find them to be extremely useful when I’m looking for a product that rarely have bargains associated with it.

If you don’t know what RSS is or what a feed reader/news aggregator is, for that matter, I recommend that you take a peek at our help page on Bargain Feeder. If, after reading it, you still have questions about RSS or Bargain Feeder’s custom RSS feeds, please write a comment to this blog post, or write us a note with your question.
